The New York State Technical Assistance Center at Syracuse University supports colleges and universities across the state in developing, expanding and strengthening inclusive postsecondary education programs (IPSE) for students with intellectual disability. We are dedicated to fostering real inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, empowering them to achieve academic, social, and career success. Through collaboration, innovation, and advocacy, we aim to create equitable learning environments that celebrate diversity and unlock the potential ofevery student. The core elements of our services are:
- Tailored information and support through consultations, communications, and resources.
- Systematic and continuous assistance to ensure the creation, sustainability, and growth of IPSE programs.
- Collaboration with individuals, programs, and institutional teams to address key needs such as program design, developing funding sources, residential life, resource utilization and more.
Inclusive Higher Education in New York State
Over 3.7 million adults in New York have disabilities, 25% of the state’s population. Of those, an estimated 300,000-500,000 have intellectual or developmental disabilities. But only 27% of New Yorkers have access to inclusive postsecondary education programs in their county; 12% of all higher education institutions in the state offer one of these programs.
Our Technical Services
We provide multiple levels and types of support across an email helpdeks, meetings, specialized training, and resource sharing:
- Universal: Rapid responses, typically via email, offering links to existing resources
- General: Deeper insight through virtual meetings or personalized responses.
- Targeted: Intensive support requiring three or more hours to help institutions meet specific goals, such as preparing applications or drafting strategic plans.
- Customized: Specialized training, strategic planning, and sustained support designed to strengthen both new and established IPSE programs.
